"Nellie's Book - The Early Life of
Victoria Wood’s Mother" (Sutton Publishing 2006, now History Press) Foreword
by Victoria Wood. Surviving poverty in industrial Manchester in the 1920s and
1930s. Helen Colleen (Nellie) Mape, born 1919, was one of eight children born
to very poor Irish Catholic parents. Nellie worked full-time at a steelworks
from the age of fourteen, met her husband Stanley Wood at eighteen, and by the
end of WW2 was married with two children. "Nellie's Book" is the
remarkably detailed story of a girl growing up in real poverty, telling how her
large working-class family managed to stay above the breadline. Based on her
notes and essays - in later life Nellie gained a BA degree and an MA. She died
in 2001, with her writings largely unpublished. This is her story, largely in Nellie's
own words.
